HaSu Gets New Shearing Tools by Hazen Reed and Susan Muther
HaSu Ranch and its sister company, Breedworks have joined with Mike Safley to create a tool to provide cutting-edge science to the alpaca industry which will allow breeders of all sizes to track the ability of individual sires to transfer specific desired fiber traits to their off-spring. This tool is an easy-to use fiber collection system that can be found on the Ideal Alpaca Community's website and uses the laboratories of Yocom-McColl to study fiber samples and produce detailed histograms. Yocom-McColl can then study the collected data and with the aid of experts at Virginia Tech create a data base that will allow this industry to more successfully breed to a higher quality fiber...

HaSu Training by
Long before you make your reservations and pay your show fees and long before you pack the trailer you must begin to prepare your alpacas for their trip to an alpaca show. In fact, aside from ensuring a safe birth and a clean bill of health, it is one of the first things you will do for your alpaca. Training an alpaca begins at a very early age but by preparing your alpaca to be comfortable being handled and led you are doing one of the kindest things you can do for your alpaca...

HaSu's New Accoyo Suri Herdsire by
HaSu Ranch is thrilled to announce a new
addition to their suri herdsire offering, NGG Accoyo Tiago Primo. It is with
careful, thorough research that we chose this particular suri male. Successful
herdsire selection is the cornerstone for a successful breeding program. The
selection of a herdsire is without a doubt the most important factor in
determining the future quality of a herd. This is true whether you breed
huacayas or suris, but in the case of suri programs, herdsire selection has an
added element of complexity.
Hay Bales by
Alpacas survive well on different kinds of low protein hay or pasture grass, providing
it has a balanced mineral content. It is generally accepted that hay that is 10-12 % protein is adequate for maintaining a healthy herd, with the caveat that their mineral and vitamin requirements are met.
Hay Feeder by
Almost any 12-18 inch tall by 4-8 foot long box would work for use as a hay feeder. The most important thing about selecting your hay feeder is that it should keep the hay off the ground, but low enough that even the smaller alpacas have access to the hay. We use this10ft Bunk feeder from Tractor Supply.
heated bucket by
If you live in a region that has freezing temperature, you will need a way to heat the alpacas drinking water. Heated water buckets are a convenient and relatively inexpensive way to do this.
Herding Wands by
Wands are an essential tool in herding or sorting one or more alpacas from the herd. They act as an extension of your arm and allow you to take advantage of the alpacas' natural behavior to communicate your desires.

How to Select Winners by Mike Safley
There are some traits that are common denominators among prize winning alpacas. They include: 1) size - larger alpacas tend to win; 2) bite - a bad bite often eliminates an alpaca from competition for first or second place; 3) in huacayas crimp wins; 4) in suris luster wins; 5) density often becomes a determining factor amongst similar alpacas; 6) fineness is good, but absolute superiority in fineness is rarely the determining factor in ribbon placement...

History of the AFCNA (Alpaca Fiber Coop of North America) by AFCNA
The AFCNA is an agricultural cooperative wholly owned by its Members, who are
producers of alpaca fiber and who have purchased one share of common
voting stock. Members annually invest at least 50% of their annual
fiber production in the cooperative in exchange for a share of the
profits of the cooperative in proportion to the quantity and quality of
fiber they invest. The AFCNA uses the members' fiber as an asset to
generate cash for the manufacture of finished products designed by the
AFCNA. We produce and sell value-added products on behalf of members to
generate greater return for their fiber investment than if the
cooperative simply paid them the world market value for their raw
fiber.
