Wraps & Bandages

Wraps & Bandages
Image Description

Medical wraps are an essential item for the alpaca care. They aren't only used for injuries! The more traditional uses for bandage wrap are easy to envision. But there are non-emergencies that call for some sort of wrapping as well.

Vet wrap, the colored rolls shown here, are easy and convenient as the fabric sticks to itself and not the alpaca. Therefore, it is ideal for treating things like small hernias that may occur in newborns and securing catheters. But we also use it to wrap a female's tail prior to breeding. This helps to keep any fecal matter that may have been on her tail from taking a ride on the male's penis as he penetrates. It also makes it easier for the male to find his way. And at the other end of the mating game, we wrap a female's tail just before birthing. Again, this helps to keep things more sterile, especially in the event we have to go in and help. Having the tail wrapped also makes it easier for us to see what's happening and monitor progress from a distance.
